Between Aug. 21 and Sept. 26, a military exercise will be held by the US Marine Corps and the Japan Ground Self Defense Force aimed at recapturing the Diaoyutai islands from China, according to Chinese state broadcaster China National Radio run by the government.
The islands in the East China Sea, known as Diaoyu to China and Senkaku to Japan, which administers them, are at the center of a territorial dispute chiefly between Japan and China. Taiwan, which also claims the uninhabited islands, refers to them as the Diaoyutai. Activists from both China and Japan have landed on the islands in the last week to assert sovereignty claims.
The military exercise was first reported by the Tokyo-based Sankei Shimbun on Aug. 18, but was not picked up by other Japanese media. Beginning on Aug. 19, Japanese reporters turned their attention to the other exercises at the Oita and Shizuoka. Sankei Shimbun stated that this exercise was prepared by both US and Japan after 14 Chinese activists landed on the disputed islands nearly a week ago. Japanese activists then landed on the islands on Sunday in a tit-for-tat demonstration.
The exercise will take place in the areas between Okinawa and the Northern Marianas. Islands such as Guam and Tinian will be used by both the US Marines and the Japanese army to simulate amphibious assaults.
Even though China is not mentioned clearly in the scenario, the exercise is aimed to recapture inhabited islands like the Senkaku from enemy forces. This is a clear message sent by the United States to China that Washington will not allow Beijing to change the status quo by taking over the islands by force, according to the CCP mouthpiece People's Daily. Despite this, direct confrontation with China is not desired by US policymakers. A Chinese military analyst named Liang Yongchun told the People's Daily that the United States is trying to put both China and Japan under its control through this method.
While demonstrating the will of the United States to defend Japan from an attack by China, Washington will not allow Tokyo to turn to unilateral military force over the issue. Liang claimed that Japan is only a tool to maintain American influence in the region. Through providing more advanced weapons to Japan, the United States is able to control its armed forces more. Even though the US forces in Japan are now extremely unpopular among the Japanese population, no politician in Japan is bold enough to call for them to leave. Through the eyes of Chinese observers like Liang, Japan is little more than a puppet for the United States.
